Apple Cider Vinegar With Cranberry Juice: Recipe, Benefits & What Science Says

Apple cider vinegar with cranberry juice combines two intensely tart ingredients into one surprisingly refreshing drink.

The basic recipe is simple: dilute apple cider vinegar in water, add cranberry juice, and adjust the strength to your taste.

But this combination has also picked up a long list of supposed benefits online—from weight loss and “detoxing” to urinary tract health.

Some of those ideas have legitimate research behind the individual ingredients. Others are exaggerated.

Here's how to make the drink and what the science actually says.

Apple Cider Vinegar With Cranberry Juice Recipe

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cold water
  • 2–4 ounces cranberry juice
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • Ice, optional
  • Lemon wedge, optional
  • 1 teaspoon honey, optional

Directions

  1. Fill a glass with 8 ounces of cold water.
  2. Add 2–4 ounces of cranberry juice.
  3. Stir in 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
  4. Add ice if desired.
  5. Taste and adjust with additional water if it's too strong.

If you're new to drinking ACV, start with 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar instead of a tablespoon.

The goal isn't to make the strongest drink possible. It's to make something appropriately diluted that you actually enjoy.

What Does Apple Cider Vinegar With Cranberry Juice Taste Like?

Tart.

Very tart.

Apple cider vinegar contributes a sharp, fermented acidity, while cranberry juice adds a brighter fruit acidity and berry flavor.

Using water keeps the combination from becoming overwhelming.

If the drink is too sour, you can increase the water, add a small amount of honey, or use a sweeter cranberry juice blend.

What Kind of Cranberry Juice Should You Use?

Look at the label.

“Cranberry juice” can describe several very different beverages.

100% Cranberry Juice

Pure cranberry juice is intensely tart and usually requires more dilution.

This is the simplest option if you want cranberry without a significant amount of added sugar.

Cranberry Juice Cocktail

Cranberry juice cocktails are generally sweeter and easier to drink but may contain added sugar or other sweeteners.

Cranberry Juice Blends

Some products combine cranberry with apple, grape, or other fruit juices.

These tend to taste sweeter than pure cranberry juice.

There isn't one universally “correct” version for this recipe. Choose based on your goals and check the Nutrition Facts panel if sugar intake matters to you.

Why Do People Mix Apple Cider Vinegar and Cranberry Juice?

The combination has become popular partly because both ingredients already have individual reputations in the wellness world.

The important distinction is this:

Research on cranberry and research on apple cider vinegar do not automatically prove that combining the two creates additional benefits.

There isn't strong clinical evidence showing that an ACV-cranberry mixture has some unique synergistic effect.

We can, however, look at what researchers have found about each ingredient separately.

What Does Research Say About Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar has been investigated particularly for its possible effects on blood glucose and other metabolic markers.

A 2023 randomized clinical trial involving people with type 2 diabetes reported improvements in several blood-glucose and lipid measurements during ACV consumption. The researchers also emphasized the need for larger and longer studies. Read the study on PubMed.

Another randomized clinical trial reported potential beneficial effects of apple vinegar on certain glycemic measures in people with type 2 diabetes. Read the research on PubMed.

These results are interesting, but ACV should not be presented as a treatment or replacement for prescribed diabetes care.

What Does Research Say About Cranberry Juice?

Cranberry has been researched extensively in connection with urinary tract infections.

A major 2023 Cochrane review analyzed 50 studies involving 8,857 participants. The review concluded that cranberry products reduced the risk of symptomatic, culture-confirmed UTIs in some populations, including women with recurrent UTIs. The evidence did not support the same conclusion for every population studied. Read the review on PubMed.

That's considerably more nuanced than saying:

“Cranberry juice cures UTIs.”

It doesn't.

The evidence relates primarily to reducing the risk of recurrence in certain groups, not treating an active bacterial infection.

If you have symptoms of a bladder infection—including burning during urination, frequent or intense urges to urinate, or lower abdominal discomfort—the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases recommends contacting a healthcare professional. NIDDK: Bladder Infection Symptoms & Causes.

Is Apple Cider Vinegar With Cranberry Juice Good for UTIs?

Don't use an ACV-cranberry drink as a substitute for medical treatment.

Cranberry products have evidence supporting a potential role in preventing some recurrent UTIs, but that is different from curing an existing infection.

And there isn't good evidence showing that adding apple cider vinegar makes cranberry juice a more effective UTI treatment.

If you suspect you have a UTI, get it evaluated.

Untreated bladder infections can spread to the kidneys.

Does Apple Cider Vinegar With Cranberry Juice Help With Weight Loss?

This is another area where internet claims frequently get ahead of the evidence.

Apple cider vinegar has been studied in relation to body weight and metabolic health, but an ACV-cranberry drink should not be viewed as a belly-fat-burning shortcut.

Cranberry juice also contains calories—and depending on the product, potentially a meaningful amount of sugar.

If weight loss is the goal, the bigger picture still matters:

  • Overall calorie intake
  • Food quality
  • Protein and fiber intake
  • Physical activity
  • Sleep
  • Consistency

A drink can fit into that strategy. It isn't the strategy.

Does Apple Cider Vinegar and Cranberry Juice “Detox” Your Body?

There is no convincing evidence that combining ACV and cranberry juice creates a special detoxification process.

Your liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal system, lungs, and other organs already participate in processing and eliminating substances from your body.

Calling this drink a “detox” doesn't make it more useful.

It's better described for what it really is:

A tart, fruit-forward way to drink diluted apple cider vinegar.

What Apple Cider Vinegar Should You Use?

Almost any food-grade apple cider vinegar can be used.

If you prefer raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the Mother, we recommend Fairchild's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar.

Fairchild's is labeled:

  • Organic
  • Raw and unfiltered
  • Unpasteurized
  • With the Mother
  • Full strength
  • No water added

That creates a particularly bold ACV, so cranberry juice works well as a flavorful counterbalance.

If you're wondering what “raw,” “unfiltered,” or “the Mother” actually means, read our guide to raw apple cider vinegar with the Mother.

When Should You Drink Apple Cider Vinegar With Cranberry Juice?

Whenever it fits your routine.

There isn't convincing evidence that you have to drink it at a precise time for it to “work.”

Some people prefer it:

  • In the morning
  • Around a meal
  • As an afternoon drink
  • Over ice instead of soda or another sweet beverage

Choose the time that makes it easiest to enjoy consistently and comfortably.

Can You Drink It Every Day?

For many people, moderate amounts of diluted ACV can fit into a normal diet.

But both vinegar and cranberry juice are acidic.

The American Dental Association notes that frequent exposure to acidic beverages can contribute to dental erosion. The ADA recommends reducing repeated exposure to acidic drinks and rinsing your mouth with water afterward rather than immediately brushing. Read the ADA guidance on dental erosion.

A few sensible rules:

  • Always dilute ACV.
  • Don't swish the drink around your teeth.
  • Don't continuously sip it for hours.
  • Rinse your mouth with plain water afterward.
  • Stop if it consistently irritates your stomach, throat, or mouth.

More vinegar isn't automatically more beneficial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix cranberry juice and apple cider vinegar together?

Yes. Apple cider vinegar and cranberry juice mix easily. We recommend diluting the combination with water rather than drinking concentrated ACV.

How much apple cider vinegar should I put in cranberry juice?

A practical starting point is 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of ACV in a drink containing at least 8 ounces of water plus cranberry juice.

Start weaker if you're new to vinegar.

Can I drink cranberry juice and apple cider vinegar every morning?

You can enjoy the beverage in the morning if you tolerate it well, but there's no established requirement to drink it specifically in the morning.

Is apple cider vinegar with cranberry juice good for your kidneys?

Don't assume that a cranberry-ACV drink treats kidney disease or kidney infections.

Kidney problems require appropriate medical evaluation. Fever, chills, painful urination, nausea, vomiting, or pain in the back or side can be symptoms of a kidney infection and warrant prompt medical attention.

Does cranberry juice and apple cider vinegar cleanse your bladder?

There isn't good evidence that the combination literally “cleanses” the bladder.

Cranberry products have been studied for prevention of recurrent UTIs in certain populations, which is a much more specific and evidence-based claim.

Does it burn belly fat?

There is no good evidence that cranberry juice mixed with apple cider vinegar specifically targets belly fat.

The Bottom Line

Apple cider vinegar with cranberry juice is an easy way to make ACV more flavorful.

A good starting recipe is:

8 ounces water + 2–4 ounces cranberry juice + 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar.

Use less ACV if you're just starting.

Cranberry and apple cider vinegar both have interesting bodies of research behind them, but combining them doesn't magically create a detox, UTI cure, or fat-burning drink.

Enjoy it because it's refreshing, simple, and gives you another way to incorporate diluted apple cider vinegar into your diet.
